Cinco De Mayo - What Is It?

By: Divya Chand & Salmaan Khan

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday to celebrate the victory of "la batalla de Puebla". Mexico was in debt to the French and they decided not to negotiate and wanted a piece of Mexican territory. That was May 5th, 1862. On that day was the Mexican army attacked the French from the north side of Puebla and defeated 6,000 men.

Its important day because it was a great victory for the Mexican people and government because the army was made up of men that were not trained militarily. Many were indigenous or of mixed ancestry. This also gave the people a sense of unity and patriotism.

The people were involved in the Cinco De Mayo were Napoleon's French army and Juarez's make-shift Mexican army.
